I agree with Lancaster. Yu Jiao-lung does not represent any Confuscian precept - her final dive is more Grecian than Chinese. The author of the story (a Manchurian writer born at the turn of the last century) was rebelling against traditional Chinese thinking predominant at his age: shortly post the May Fourth. The fact that Li Mu-bai failed to convert Yu Jiao-lung points to the mindset of the author that traditional Chinese values DO NOT work any more. That is why the film won Oscar Awards, but fair enough, though, no award was given to the script nor the directorship: only for other technical filming aspects which have no bearing on the theme or the philosophy behind the story.
