A. Outline of Background
According to Aristotle, first or primary philosophy (prōtē philosophia) theorises (a) being (on) as being (on), and furthermore (b) the principles, i.e. the first causes of beings. The principle of being is beingness/essence/substance (ousia→essentia/substantia). So first or primary philosophy theorises (c) essences, and in addition (d) the principles or the first causes of essences.
These statements state the subject matter of the first or primary part of philosophy according to Plato and Aristotle, namely being (on) as being (on) and beingness/essence (ousia).
Aristotle inherited such a standpoint from Plato, and Plato from Parmenides.
Heidegger in Being and Time (Sein und Zeit) took Being as the subject matter of the first or primary part of philosophy. He criticised explicitly elsewhere Plato and Aristotle for having mistaken Being (to be) for being (that which is). Heidegger put himself from the very beginning of his philosophising on Parmenides’s pathway that Being is and Non-Being is not. His accusation of forgetfulness of Being (Seinsvergessenheit) on Plato’s and Aristotle’s part did not break with Parmenides’s path¬way.
But Heidegger throughout his career has gotten an increasing sense of the force of those for which cannot be accounted by means of the account (logos) of Being. His philosophising shows a departure from the logos of Being and an advance towards another logos of another order.
Heidegger in Introduction to Metaphysics was at an early station on the way of transition. He was aware of some fundamental flaws in the approach to Being in Being and Time. Yet he adhered to the logos of Being more or less. He tried to clarify Being by means of clarifying the history of the word “Being” and the history of the thought on Being.
There are four chapters in this work. Chapter IV is a bit longer than chapters I to III taken together. We shall try to study chapters I, II and III in this series of study sessions.
